Alex grew up between a ski lodge and a racetrack in rural Ohio. She splits her time between Savannah, Georgia and Westerly, Rhode Island, with regular expeditions to Ohio, Mid-Coast Maine, the Mississippi Delta, the Catskills, Carroll Gardens, et. al.
She has been a staffer or permalancer at Jane, W, and VanityFair.com, she's served as a regular contributor to VanityFair.com, Huffington Post, GOOD magazine, and Cinespect, and her freelance writing and photography have been published by The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Topic, and others.
Her subjects range from Sundance and South by Southwest to hydropower controversy in Southeastern Turkey, and her interview portfolio spans entertainment from Audrey Tautou to Iggy Pop. She has given lectures on photography and photojournalism at City College of New York, and on freelance writing at Savannah College of Art & Design and Vassar College.
She is one of the founders and organizers of the Kingston, NY-based national arts non-profit O+ Festival, where artists and musicians barter their contributions directly for medical and dental care from art-loving health care providers, now in five cities around the U.S. Fun fact: In a past era, she recorded two albums and toured the UK with an indie folk band.
She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Esopus Foundation.
