ALEX grew up between a ski lodge and a racetrack in central Ohio. Early in her career, she was on staff at Jane magazine and, following Jane's folding, a web/editorial permalancer at W and Vanity Fair. Recently, her writing has been published by The New York Times, The Guardian, The Believer, The Washington Post, The Nation, Topic, and elsewhere. She is a senior editor at print lifestyle magazine DVEIGHT and managing editor at brain health news and science publication BEING PATIENT.

She studied photojournalism at the Salt Institute of Documentary Studies and has lectured on same at City College of New York, Savannah College of Art & Design, and her alma mater Vassar College. Her photography of musicians can be found on VanityFair.com, NPR Music and elsewhere.
She is one of the founders of the Kingston, NY-based national arts non-profit O+ Festival, where artists and musicians barter their contributions directly for medical and dental care from art-loving health care providers and volunteered for the organization in its earliest years. She has served on the Board of Advisors for the Esopus Foundation.
