Alex grew up between a ski lodge and a racetrack in rural Ohio. She splits her time between Savannah, Georgia and Westerly, Rhode Island, with regular expeditions to Ohio, Mid-Coast Maine, the Mississippi Delta, the Catskills, and her previous home of 14 years, Brooklyn.

She has been a staffer or permalancer at Jane, W, and VanityFair.com, she's served as a regular contributor to VanityFair.com, Huffington Post, GOOD magazine, and Cinespect, and her work has been published by The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, Topic, and others. She has lectured on photography and freelance writing at City College of New York, Savannah College of Art & Design, and Vassar College.

She is one of the founders of the Kingston, NY-based national arts non-profit O+ Festival, where artists and musicians barter their contributions directly for medical and dental care from art-loving health care providers, now in five cities around the U.S. In a past era, she recorded two albums and toured the UK with an indie folk band.

She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Esopus Foundation.
